Luke 3:1-20

Chapter 3
1 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, with Pontius Pilate governing Judea, Herod tetrarching Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarching the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarching Abilene, 2 In the time of high priest Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. 3 He went into all the region around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: "Voice of one crying in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.'" 5 Every ravine will be filled, and every mountain and hill will be brought low, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the rough places into smooth ways. 6 And all flesh will see the salvation of God. 7 He said therefore to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “Offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?” 8 Produce therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and do not begin to say within yourselves, "We have Abraham as a father," for I say to you that God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. 9 But already the axe is lying at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree not producing good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 10 The crowds asked him, saying, "What then should we do?" 11 He answered, saying to them, "The one having two tunics, let him share with the one not having, and the one having foods, likewise let him do." 12 Tax collectors also came to be baptized and said to him, "Teacher, what shall we do?" 13 He said to them, "Collect no more than what has been appointed to you." 14 Soldiers also asked him, "What shall we do?" He said to them, "Extort no one, accuse no one falsely, and be content with your wages." 15 Now while the people were expecting and all were reasoning in their hearts about John, lest he himself be the Messiah, 16 John answered, saying to all: "I indeed baptize you with water; but the one who is stronger than me is coming, of whom I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals; he will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and fire of judgment." 17 whose winnowing fork is in his hand to thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor and gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. 18 Many things, therefore, and other exhortations—he proclaimed the gospel to the people. 19 But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him concerning Herodias, his brother's wife, and concerning all the evil things which Herod had done, 20 He added this to everything else and shut John up in prison.
